A cat owner in Qingdao, Shandong, has attracted media attention as well as protests from a foreign animal lover because his cat is so overweight.

The cat, which has lived with its owner, surnamed Xu, for 10 years, weighs 17 kilograms, and its waistline is now 87 centimeters. Last year over 100 Chinese and international media outlets reported on Xu and the cat, calling it the heaviest one in the world.

A foreign reader even sent Xu a letter criticizing him for irresponsibly overfeeding the cat. Xu said he has tried to feed it less, which angered the cat into attacking people with its claws.
