Nearly 60 percent of Hongkongers said that they require gift-wrapping when
buying presents for Chinese New Year, although 86 percent said they don't mind
receiving gifts without wrapping.
The survey was conducted by the environmental group Friends of the Earth, who
surveyed 1,013 local people. Wellcome, one of the top three supermarket chains
in Hong Kong, said it will charge HK$0.5 (6 US cents) per piece of wrapping
paper this year. Friends of the Earth applauded the move, saying that even a
little extra money will make consumers think twice about getting it done.
