A father who wanted to disown his son legally was refused by the notary office in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province.

A retired engineer, surnamed Wen, 62, wanted his son to quit gambling, but the young man refused and continued his habit during the lunar new year holiday.

So Wen took the unprecedented step of visiting the notary office to try to break the relationship legally. But the notary office said there are no laws to support Wen's request.

At one point, Wen gave his son more than 50,000 yuan ($6,456) to do business last year, but he gambled it all away.
